🎨 How to color it

Layer the eagle’s head in ivory and warm taupe, the wing feathers in deep teal and copper, the star ornaments in golden yellow, and the mountain ridges in cool slate blue. Use sharp pencils and color from the outer wing tips inward so the tiny leaf veins, curls, and nested feather shapes stay crisp. For a mischievous twist, make the center chest star glow brighter than the side stars, as if it just winked at the mountains.

Before sunrise silvered the mandala peaks, Nico tucked his talons into a cold notch of stone and set himself a dare: one ridiculous call, just loud enough for the empty ridges to hear. The air smelled of frost and pine sap. He puffed his chest, counted three wingbeats in the dark, and squeaked, “Peep-a-roo!” Then he pretended to inspect the sky, as if eagles said such things all the time.

The ridges answered, “Peep-a-roo!” Nico’s feathers prickled with first-time courage. He tried a grander version, rolling it around his beak until it came out, “Peeeep-a-ROOO!” Back it came, wobblier and worse. The sound bounced between the stone folds, tickling the quiet morning until even the snow seemed to grin.

Then a pebble clicked below. Three mountain goats stepped from behind a ridge, their horns daubed with bright festival paint, and one held a tiny reed horn in his teeth. The smallest goat blew, “Prrrt-a-roo!” Nico laughed so hard his wings opened wide. When the sun finally touched the peaks, eagle cry and goat horn braided together, bold and silly, like that first small peep in the frost.
