Fun facts to share while coloring

A landscape is shaped by many forces working over long periods of time. Rivers can cut valleys into rock, while glaciers often leave broad U-shaped valleys and deep lakes behind. Mountains commonly form where Earth’s tectonic plates push against each other, fold, or lift the crust. In art, landscape painters often use foreground, middle ground, and background to make a flat page feel deep. They may also use aerial perspective: distant hills look lighter and bluer because the atmosphere scatters light between the viewer and the land. Even the horizon line is a helpful clue; it marks where the sky appears to meet the ground or water.

Coloring tips

For a classic landscape palette, build sky blues, cloud white and soft gray, meadow greens, pine greens, earth browns, sandy tans, stone grays, water blue or teal, and sunset gold, peach, rose, and violet. Snowy peaks can stay mostly white with pale blue shadows. Work from the farthest area to the closest: keep distant hills lighter, then make foreground grasses, rocks, and tree trunks stronger and sharper. Horizontal strokes suit lakes and fields, short flicks make convincing grass, and gentle circular shading softens clouds. For a creative twist, color the same view as a dawn, noon, sunset, or moonlit scene, changing only the sky and shadows to transform the whole landscape.
