Every evening, Quill swept grit from the ford and scolded the stream for licking the stones out of line, its cold chatter answering slap-slap-slap. Until one day an otter in a reed hat appeared, bowed, and presented a bill for “unauthorized splashing.” Because Quill laughed so hard he dropped his broom, the otter stole it; because the broom was gone, Quill used his own supper coins to wedge flat new stones beneath the water, where travelers would never notice. Finally the otter returned the broom with a wink, and the stream went on licking the stones out of line.
