At the moon abbey, Eldon followed the old carved knots with one claw, not to solve them, only to feel where each line dipped under another. Night air smelled of rain on stone. Above him, the crescent held its pale curve like a bowl turned sideways, and below, the garden clouds drifted low among the leaves without hurry.
He waited until the abbey bell made no sound at all. Then the silence grew bright. The knots around the crescent seemed to loosen by a breath, and in the blank hollow nobody had thought to search, a small room appeared—round, silver, and full of sleeping moths dusted with moonlight. They opened their wings together, soft as pages.
Eldon did not enter. He simply hung there while the moths carried their glow along the braided paths, lighting every patient turn he had touched. By dawn, the crescent was plain stone again, but his claw still held the cool shine of rain on stone.
