Between two jars at the moon fair, Pip counted candy corn by tapping each piece: tik, tik, tik. One yellow kernel was missing from his perfect row, so he tucked a striped sweet under one wing and fluttered past the warm cinnamon stall, past paper bats rustling like leaves.
At the quiet edge of the fair, a sugar-moth bumped his nose, dusting it with vanilla sparkle. “Wrong way,” she whispered, and led him to a booth no one had noticed, where leftover candies made a bright little trail back toward the lanterns. Pip paid with his striped sweet and carried the extra kernel home.
But beside his jars, the empty place no longer looked lonely. It looked like a doorway. Pip set the kernel there anyway, then drew the moth’s candy trail on a wrapper so every small flyer could find the way in. Next time you spot his starry wings, see if he’s still holding the sweet that showed him where he belonged.
