Every dusk, Aelith wound willow strips into practice knots and tapped each crossing with her plain hazel wand, trying to make a game no elder had taught her. The grove smelled of rain on stone, and her fingers prickled with bark dust as she whispered the rule: “Follow the strand without lifting the spark.” Until one day, the spark leapt ahead.
Because of that, every carved stone in the ring flashed with her unfinished pattern. Because of that, the leaf paths twisted into loops, and the quick brown wrens shot through them like arrows, scolding in sharp notes. Aelith ran, wings beating hard, chasing her own design as it tied the grove tighter and tighter.
At the center, she planted her heels, pressed the wand tip to the first crossing, and traced the whole game from memory: over, under, around, through. The last loop snapped into a bright crown of green fire, then settled into the stones as if it had always belonged there. Aelith laughed, breathless and proud, with bark dust still on the hands that had made it.
