Between the glass reef’s black seams, Mara searched for the one color the tide-makers had forgotten. Every pane had its place: kelp wore green, coral held rose, fish kept quick yellow sparks. Only the wide turtle path stayed clear as water, and Mara felt the blankness hum against her shell like an unanswered note.
She nosed through anemones, under ribbonweed, even inside the hollow coral pipes that smelled of salt and old rain. Nothing. Then a small click came from the place nobody touched: the quiet scallop shells set along the reef’s outer frame. Mara pressed one open. Hidden in its hinge was a sliver of blue so deep it seemed to remember every ocean before this one.
“Keep it where you fit,” whispered the tide through the lead lines. Mara slid the blue into the empty path, and the whole reef brightened around her, not to show where she should go, but where she had always belonged. Ever since, sea turtles carry shell patterns like little windows, because the first true blue was found where nobody thought to look.
