🎨 How to color it

Color the lantern frame antique brass, the central flame amber and tangerine, the moth wings dusty lavender, and the moon pale butter yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny stars, vine curls, wing markings, and narrow stained-glass panes, working one section at a time to keep the pattern crisp. Try a cool indigo-to-teal night behind the warm flame so the smoke ribbons and brass edges seem to glow.

Every evening, Cressida crossed the glass conservatory with a brass token in her glove, tapping each lantern once before the moths woke. The token was no bigger than a coat button, but it had belonged to the friend who vanished while cataloging impossible lights, and she never let it leave her palm. Until one Halloween, the largest lantern answered her tap with a sound like rain on crystal and a flame that bent into a question mark.

Because of that, Cressida set the token into the lantern’s empty clasp. Because of that, smoke lifted in silver ribbons, moths gathered like living punctuation, and every star beyond the panes seemed to lean closer. “What did you see?” she whispered. The flame showed no face, no map, only a door-shaped brightness opening inside the dark. At last she understood: the token had not been a keepsake, but an invitation, warm as breath in her glove. She stepped nearer, curious enough to be carried, and crossed the glass conservatory with a brass token in her glove.
