Under the crooked hill moon, Pip the pumpkin sat very still beside the tall witch hat. He wanted to hear the hat’s tiny midnight giggle, so he did not poke it, shake it, or peek inside. Leaves scratched the bare tree—skritch, skritch—and two bats flapped over the sleepy rooftops.
The hat only leaned in the grass. Pip waited while the road shone silver and the candy bucket smelled like sugar apples. “Any giggle yet?” whispered Pip.
Then—plink! A wrapped candy slid out from under the hat brim. Plink, plunk, ploppy-pop! More treats rolled into the bucket, where a second little pumpkin had been hiding and grinning the whole time. Pip laughed so hard his toothy smile wobbled. If you peek at the bucket, you may spot the patient prankster who made the hat’s tiny midnight giggle.
