By the cattail pond, Della sprang from reed to reed with a plip, plap, ploop. She wanted every skimmer bug to find a sip before the sun turned the mud warm and sleepy. She nudged dew into curled leaves, rolled one drop along a grass blade, and whispered, “For whoever gets thirsty first!” The air smelled like wet stems and bright summer water.
She hopped back to her lily pad for one last bounce. Boing! The pad tipped, and from underneath floated a tiny cup made of folded lily skin. Inside was a cool blue pebble and three dew drops she had not placed there. The skimmers had tucked it away for Della while she was busy giving.
