🎨 How to color it

Color the haunted house in dusty violet and weathered gray, the huge moon in pale butter yellow, the bats in charcoal, and the owl in warm amber. Use sharp colored pencils for the roof shingles, fence points, windowpanes, and skinny tree branches so the thin lines stay crisp. Try making every lit window a different Halloween glow—pumpkin orange, ghostly green, and candle gold.

Every evening in October, Tessa raced up Moonjaw Hill to ring the old house’s tiny brass doorbell charm before the bats lit the sky-lanterns. The charm had belonged to her brother, and its ding sounded like his laugh in a tin cup. Until one windy night, the bell made no sound at all. Above the crooked roof, the bats wobbled blindly through cold moonlight, and the path stones flickered like wet teeth.

Because of that silence, Tessa climbed the porch rail, shoved open the sighing door, and chased the smell of chimney smoke upstairs. Because of that chase, she found a little ghost tangled in a window cord, whispering, “I can’t pull the moon shade!” Tessa could keep the charm safe, or snap its ribbon and use its last ding.

She rang it against the window latch. DING! The shade flew up, silver light poured out, and the bats found their glowing trails. No one saw Tessa tuck the broken ribbon into her pocket and run home grinning. Next time you spot the tiny ghost in the upper window, listen for a laugh in a tin cup.
