🎨 How to color it

Color the castle cake with vanilla-cream walls, strawberry-pink frosting swirls, gold star garlands, and sky-blue balloons around the towers. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny brick marks, scalloped roof tiles, banner crowns, and confetti, then fill the wider cake walls with smooth marker strokes. Try making each flag a different jewel color, but keep the two arched doors matching in warm caramel brown.

Beside the lantern quay, where ropes creaked and the river smelled of rain, Vera pressed both palms against a tall round cake. It was meant for the Midnight Feast, but its frosting kept sliding down in soft sighs. She wanted one cake to reach the mayor’s table without wobbling. From under a curl of icing came a tapping sound: tik, tik, tik.

A tiny sugar mason stepped out, carrying a spoon no bigger than a fish scale. “Your cake is trying to stand,” he whispered. Vera’s fingers went cold, but she did not run. “Then show me where to hold it,” she said. Together they pinched the frosting into doorways, stacked towers where the icing sagged, and hung little stars along the weakest seam. When the river bell boomed, the cake stood taller than Vera, steady as a secret.

Ever since that night, party cakes that grow too high are given castle walls, flags, and doors, so the sweetness has somewhere brave to stand. Next time you spot the star garland, see if you can find the seam Vera saved beside the lantern quay.
