Behind the candy-shop shelves, when the jars clicked in the cooling dark, Orla kept a sugar-pearl button in her apron pocket. It was small, smooth, and warm from her hand, the last button from her old coat. She had saved it to sew onto her apron before the morning rush.

Then the bell gave one tiny ting. A delivery sprite slid in with a cake order for a child who had been too sick to visit the shop window.
