Behind the moonlit bakery window, Juniper pressed her ear to the cool glass and listened for the sound she had chased down three quiet blocks. It was not music exactly. It was a soft hum, like a spoon circling a teacup, coming from the tall cake on the silver stand. Vanilla and cocoa drifted through the keyhole. “Just one more note,” Juniper whispered.
The hum rose and fell through the frosting, along the drips, around the piped shells, and up to the curled ribbons on top. Juniper imagined each layer holding a different tone: low sponge, bright icing, whispery cream. When the baker left a side door open for the night air, Juniper slipped inside and stood very still in the blue-white light.
A sugar-cricket, no bigger than a sprinkle, stepped from behind a chocolate curl with a violin made from a candy wrapper. “You heard the cake tuning?” it asked. Juniper nodded, too amazed to blink. Together they listened until the last drip gave a mellow plink, and the whole bakery seemed to breathe vanilla. If you study the curled ribbons on top, can you guess where the tiny musician bowed that one more note?
