At the moon arbor, Maribel set herself a private Halloween challenge: count thirteen moon moths by the sound of their wings alone. The silver leaves smelled of rain and licorice, and every flutter made a tiny papery chuckle against the vines. She lifted one sleeve, let the night pass under it, and whispered, “Seven, unless someone is wearing boots.”
More wings arrived, soft as powdered velvet, circling her hat brim and the long curls of her hair. Maribel did not turn; that was the rule she had made, and rules were funnier when they were unnecessary. She counted ten, eleven, twelve—then a moth landed on the crescent moon itself and tapped twice, as if taking attendance.
Only then did she understand the joke: the moths had challenged themselves to count one witch without being noticed. Maribel stood very still, belonging completely to their ridiculous ceremony, while the moon arbor rustled like a room trying not to laugh.
