At the cedar arch, Auden pressed one paw to the single warm shard that caught the last sun. He had set himself a small challenge: carry its heat to the far marker before moonrise, then bring it back uncracked. The pass smelled of cold stone and resin. Needles ticked against his shoulders; his breath silvered the air. Halfway down, the shard’s edge nicked his pad, a bright little sting. He wrapped it in moss and kept walking.
Near the frost hollow, he heard no cry, only the thin rattle of wings against ice. A night moth, glazed with sleet, clung to a black twig. Auden set the warm shard beneath the twig and turned away before the wings loosened. “There,” he whispered, so softly the trees could pretend they had not heard. He reached the far marker empty-pawed, then returned through the dark with the cut pulsing, the path faintly lit behind him by one small warmth he had not kept.
