Beneath the quiet driftway, where the water smelled faintly of salt and cold stone, Edda chose one thin current line and promised not to leave it until it ended. Other turtles darted through bubbly shortcuts, but Edda paddled slowly, counting the soft shhh of water sliding over her shell. The line curved, dipped, and nearly vanished beside a pale jellyfish whose tentacles combed the sea like silver threads.

“Wait,” whispered the jellyfish, though its bell made no sound. Edda held still. The current line trembled against her flipper, and another line answered from far below, then another from far above. Patiently, Edda watched them stretch into long ribbons so every slow swimmer could read where the water was going.

She followed the first ribbon home by starlight, her flippers tired and her heart bright with the secret.
