🎨 How to color it

Color the bear a warm cinnamon brown, the tall termite mound sandy ocher, the acacia tree tops olive green, and the thorn bush a dry gray-brown. Use short pencil strokes that follow the bear’s shaggy fur lines, then switch to lighter, vertical strokes for the clumps of grass. Try giving the termite mound darker orange shadows inside its little raised patches so it looks bumpy and sun-baked.

Every afternoon, when the grasshoppers clicked like tiny spoons, Gus patted clay into a little snack-box beside the termite mound. He wanted a box with a proper door for his roasted seeds, but every door flopped open and spilled seeds into the dust.

Until one day, his best clay latch vanished. Because of that, Gus sniffed under thorn twigs, behind grass clumps, and even around the mound’s bumpy toes, getting clay on his nose. Because of that, the meerkat twins laughed so hard they hiccupped. “Check the place nobody checks!” they squeaked.

Gus looked at his own pawprint. There, pressed into the wet mud, was the latch—stuck perfectly in the shape his claws had made. He grinned, copied the print, and made a claw-click door that snapped shut all by itself. Next time the grasshoppers click like tiny spoons, see if Gus is sniffing for seeds or admiring the first snack-box he built with his own paws.
