Under the midway lights, Glimmer balanced on the cupcake stand and polished one bent silver sprinkle with the corner of a napkin. It looked like any sprinkle, except it had been the first thing to tumble from the sugar jar the night the stand learned to laugh. Whenever Glimmer tapped it, the striped paper cups made a tiny ruffle-ruffle sound, and the air smelled like cinnamon, waxed tickets, and warm popcorn. “One more clue,” Glimmer whispered, because the sprinkle had been pointing at odd things all evening: a star candy, a cherry stem, then the third flower on the wrapper.

The clues kept getting sillier. Tap the star candy: squeak. Nudge the cherry: plink. Wiggle the leaf: pfft-pfft-pfft, like a baby dragon sneezing into a paper bag. Glimmer leaned closer, eyes shining, while passing beetles bought caramel apples and never noticed the cupcake stand quietly snorting. Then the silver sprinkle slipped from Glimmer’s hand and landed in a little groove between two wrapper stripes.

All at once, every sprinkle on the pumpkin pile hopped into place: circles became buttons, squares became levers, stars became tiny alarm bells. The whole stand was not a dessert display after all; it was a prank organ built by fairies who preferred frosting to gears. Glimmer pressed the bent silver sprinkle, and the cherry popped up like a conductor’s baton. If you ever spot that curling stem above the cupcake, listen for the ruffle-ruffle of the first thing that taught the stand to laugh.
