🎨 How to color it

Color the pumpkin a rich harvest orange, the witch hat deep violet with moss-green patches, and the bats smoky gray against golden stars. Use sharp colored pencils for the hat stitches, vine curls, and tiny bat wings, then switch to smoother strokes on the pumpkin’s wide ribs. Try making the spider buckle silver with a tiny red gem so it feels like the secret clasp of the whole scene.

Under the moon garden’s curled vines, Hollis tapped his candlelight against his own pumpkin ribs: blink, blink, pause. He had invented a game called Star-Secret, and he wanted one perfect rule before the bats arrived to play. Count three stars, trade one grin, then—what? The night smelled of damp leaves and cold soil, and the empty space after “then” bothered him like an itch under his stem.

So Hollis rolled beyond his cozy vine ring, over scratchy roots and silver puddles, following a bat that carried a torn purple hat on one claw. “Wait! I need your secret rule,” Hollis called. The bat dropped the hat on him by mistake. It slid over his eyes, pricked him with a buckle shaped like a spider, and cost him his brightest candle-spark.

Inside the floppy brim, the missing rule whispered in a papery rustle: after you count the stars, give your light away. Hollis rolled home glowing smaller but happier, and when the bats circled close, every shared grin made another star seem to wake. Next time you spot the spider buckle, see if Hollis is still tapping: blink, blink, pause.
