🎨 How to color it

Color the big X a deep ocean blue, the little x a sea-glass teal, the x-ray fish silver with lavender bones, and the bubbles pale aqua. Use sharp colored pencils for the fish’s rib lines, fin stripes, and tiny bubble highlights, then switch to broader strokes for the thick letter shapes. Try a secret glow by shading yellow-green around the fish’s skeleton and leaving the centers of the bubbles bright white.

Under the kelp archive, where the water smelled like salt and old paper, Xavi kept a pearl button under his fin. It had fallen from his family’s tide clock, and when he rubbed it, he could almost hear tick-tick through the current. He wanted one thing before moonrise: a round glass bead to mend the cracked lantern over the alphabet shelf, where the X cards had gone dim.

So Xavi slipped beyond the warm coral nook into the cold stripe of open water. Sand scratched his belly. A crab guard clacked, “No bead without a shine.” Xavi had no coin, only the button. Between us, he held it for a very long second before placing it in the crab’s basket. The crab gave him the bead and never asked why Xavi’s fins shook.

Back at the shelf, Xavi fixed the lantern and swam away before the archivist eel woke. By morning, every X on every card gleamed bright enough for the smallest shrimp to trace. Nobody knew who had paid. But if you spot a silver fish near the bubbles, keep Xavi’s secret: he still listens for tick-tick in the current.
