Every day, Ketz counted the bubbles that popped from the warm sand vents: one, two, swish, three. He had set himself a challenge—when thirteen bubbles rose at once, he would swim through the middle without grabbing a leaf. Usually, he practiced beside the tall sea plants, where the water smelled salty-sweet and the fronds brushed his cheeks like ribbons.
Until one day, thirteen bubbles burst up in a shining ring. Ketz kicked forward, heart thump-thumping, but a sneaky current shoved the ring sideways into the kelp maze. Because of that, he had to twist after it between long leaves. Because of THAT, his curled tail bumped a sleeping crab’s shell with a clack. “No backing out now,” Ketz whispered.
The bubble gate wobbled smaller. Ketz tucked his chin, flicked his tiny fin, and zipped through just before pop-pop-pop! The crab opened one eye and clicked applause. Next time you spot those bubbles around Ketz, can you count whether thirteen rose from the warm sand vents?
