Under the vine market’s high green hoops, Ivo set himself the same small challenge every morning: find one perfect bit of wonder before the dew dried. He passed the nut sellers, the beetle stamp booth, and the fern-paper stall, sniffing the cool smell of moss and rain. Usually he chose one thing—a round berry, a striped leaf, a fallen petal—and tucked it into his basket. Until one day, every path glittered at once.
Because of that, Ivo picked two berries instead of one. Because of that, a flower leaned into the basket, then a fern frond, then three shy mushrooms with caps like tiny umbrellas. The basket grew heavy and fragrant, creaking softly in his arms. Ivo stopped beneath the curling handle-vines and whispered, “This is too much for only me.”
So he carried it to the middle of the market and opened his basket like a door. Beetles paused their stamping. Moths settled on the rim. Even the rain-pipe musician forgot to play. Ivo gave everyone one small wonder, and the joy did not shrink; it rustled bigger, leaf by leaf. Next time you spot the berry clusters and crowded caps, see if you can tell which perfect almost started it all.
