But the best dew-dot sat high on her cap, where she could feel it tickle but not reach it. “Psst,” buzzed a red ladybug, landing softly. “Don’t shake yet.”

Pippa waited while the sun made the air smell sweet and green. Waiting cost her the dew-dot; it slid away with a plip into the dirt. Then the ladybug opened one spotted wing, and tucked beneath it was a silver seed no one had thought to look for. Pippa carried that home in her moss cup, warmer than dew.
