Every day, Bexley bent her long neck over Reed Pond and counted the wiggles on the water before lunch. One wiggle meant breeze, two meant minnows, and three meant the grumpy frog had sneezed again. She loved guessing before the splash. The pond smelled like wet clay and peppery reeds, and the cattails clicked softly in the wind.
Until one day, a small elephant popped from behind the reeds and blew four bubbly snorts into the pond. Blorp-blorp-blorp-BLORP! Bexley’s ears twitched. Four wiggles were not in her chart. “What does that one mean?” she asked. The elephant grinned. “It means follow me before the mud remembers.” Because of that, Bexley stepped around the bank, nose low, chasing the ripples. Because of THAT, she found tiny trunk-dots stamped in the mud, each one pointing toward a bent reed, a crooked cloud, then a patch of grass that giggled with hidden guinea fowl.
At last, the elephant saluted with his trunk and revealed the message: LUNCH IS BEHIND YOU. Bexley turned and found the frog sitting on her leaf pile like a king. Next time you spot those pond wiggles, can you tell whether they mean breeze, minnows, or blorp-blorp-blorp-BLORP?
