Under the white noon of the mosaic plain, Tavi stood beside the only acacia sprig and counted the heat moving through her coat: triangle, ring, hexagon, breath. The leaves gave off a dry green smell, and the ground clicked softly as beetles crossed it. Shadows shortened, then loosened, and still she waited. At last a passing cloud slid over the sun, and the surprise arrived where nobody had looked: inside her pale markings, tiny circles of stored light began to glow like remembered mornings. Tavi lowered her long face to the sprig, and the beetles walked by those quiet suns.
