🎨 How to color it

Layer the luna moth in pale jade and cream, the crescent moon in antique gold, the roses in dusty pink, and the star swirls in deep indigo. Use sharp pencils for the moth’s crosshatched wings, rose petals, and veined leaves, turning the page as you follow each engraved curve. For a dramatic twist, blend the background from midnight blue at the top to violet behind the roses so the gold crescent seems handmade from captured light.

By lantern smoke and crushed rose scent, Cyril fitted brass ribs into a crescent frame above his stall, then stretched two silk wings wide enough to catch the wind. The night bazaar clattered around him—coin bells, boot heels, a fiddler’s fast bow—but his hands kept their own rhythm: knot, pull, smooth; knot, pull, smooth. He wanted the lantern ready before the midnight parade, not bought from the lacquer carts, but made by his own ink-stained fingers.

As the silk tightened, the moth painted on it seemed to gather breath. Star charms trembled overhead. Cyril added the last thread, and the crescent cast an enormous shadow across the rose crates—not a blur, but a map of stitches he had never sewn. “That was hiding in the dark?” he whispered. The pattern pointed to the underside of his worktable, where old pinpricks formed the exact same wings.

Laughing, Cyril hammered the table pins into place, tied fresh cord through them, and lifted his lantern higher. Now the shadow, the silk, and the crescent all answered one another, racing over the roses as the parade drums began: knot, pull, smooth; knot, pull, smooth.
