Every evening, Evadne tied finished sky maps with gray thread and laid one black button beside the inkstone, though no coat had ever claimed it. It was smooth as river glass, warm after sunset, and she never touched it until the lamps hissed blue. Then, one evening, the archive ceiling exhaled; shelves bowed inward, and the star charts began turning themselves with a dry, leafy whisper.
Because of that, a spiral map slid open under her hands, crowded with moons, hearts, vines, and small sharp stars. Because of that, the button rolled to the map’s empty center and waited. Evadne’s thumb hovered. “Just once,” she said, and pressed.
The paper gave beneath her like a held breath. Ink paths lifted, not flat now but luminous, curling around her wrist with the scent of rain on stone. At last the archive stilled, and the button became a tiny dark moon at the center of the first map she had ever dared to finish.
