🎨 How to color it

Try barn red for the tractor body, sunflower yellow for the wheel hubs, slate gray for the exhaust pipe, and soft green for the striped hills behind it. Use sharp colored pencils and color the tiny curls, petals, tire treads, and grille bands from the outside edges inward to keep the patterns crisp. For a playful twist, make every other hill stripe a different green while leaving a few cloud shapes nearly white for breathing room.

At the bend where the farm road turned from pebbles to dust, Finch polished the old tractor’s patterned hood until the morning light ran along every curl and petal. He had come to add one last stripe to the side panel before the harvest crew arrived, and the air smelled of warm metal, clover, and a little too much confidence.

The hills rolled away in neat ribs, the barn roof sat square as toast, and even the clouds seemed combed into place. Finch dabbed red paint into a vine, then heard a small, improper sound from the engine: pfft-hee. He leaned closer. The tractor gave another snicker, this time from behind the flowered panel by the front wheel.

Inside, where no mechanic had thought to look, a shallow drawer slid out on a spring. It held three striped buttons, a rubber chicken no longer than a thumb, and a note in pencil: FOR THE PERSON WHO PAINTS THE FANCY BITS. Finch laughed so hard a crow answered from the silo. He pinned one button to his overalls, tucked the chicken beside the toolbox, and finished the stripe with extra swagger. When the crew arrived, they found him exactly where he belonged: at the bend where the farm road turned from pebbles to dust.
