Under the square window of the shed, Kiva tapped her front tire against the floor: clack, clack, clack. She had invented a game called Shadow-Road, where she had to roll only where her wheel shadows touched stones. One stone lay outside the gate, near the dark mountain path where the wind smelled like cold metal and wet moss.
Kiva wanted to finish the game before the sun climbed too high, so she eased out. Her big back tire bumped a rock, and a shiny hubcap screw pinged away into the dust. That was the price: no turning back until she found it. Past the barn and silo, the shadows made a strange circle around a dry little plant. Kiva whispered, “I can go one more wheel.”
When her small tire crossed the circle, the ground gave a soft gulp. Water bubbled up, clear as glass, and lifted the missing screw right onto a flat stone. Kiva rolled home with the screw, but also with a secret spring for the farm. Next time you see the little plant between the tires, can you keep Kiva’s Shadow-Road secret?
