🎨 How to color it

Layer raspberry pink on the lollipop’s central flower, pistachio green on the leaf-filled bands, and honey gold on the two wrapped candies. Use sharp colored pencils and turn the page as you work through the spiral wedges, filling the tiniest dots and curls before the broader petal shapes. For a handmade-candy effect, blend each curved lollipop band from darker at the thick black edge to lighter toward the center.

Under the copper lamps of the confectionery, Sorrel pulled warm sugar across a marble hook until it shone like satin. She wanted one spiral that carried the touch of her own hands: thumb press, twist, rest; thumb press, twist, rest. Steam smelled faintly of lemon peel, and the cooling candy clicked softly as she laid each ribbon against the next.

The pattern widened without hurry. Leaves appeared where her knife had only meant to make grooves; little flowers gathered in the pauses between turns. Sorrel wrapped two small sweets from the trimmed ends and set them beside the tall stick, proud of their uneven seams and careful pleats.

Then a pale moth landed on the glass and opened its wings. In their powdery scales, the sugar spiral was not candy at all but a round night garden, every curl a path, every dot a lantern. Sorrel smiled and added one last petal at the center. Her hands had made a sweet; the lamplight had made it bloom, shining like satin.
