Under the drying rack, where sugar strings hung like soft harp notes, Ansel lined up candy beads and whispered his challenge: five stars before the honey clock sighed dusk. He had four small stars and one grand star, but the last cord lay curled beyond the rack’s warm shadow. To reach it, he stepped onto the cool marble sill, past two wrapped sweets that crinkled in their sleep.
The sill smelled of peppermint dust and lemon wax. Ansel tugged the cord free, but it snagged under a spiral candy, and one pink bead rolled away with a tiny tick-tick-tick. He could chase the bead and lose the cord, or wait. So he sat very still. The room hummed. The cord loosened by itself as the sugar dried, and the bead rolled back against his shoe.
“Slow things know the way,” Ansel murmured. He returned to the rack and threaded bead, heart, spiral, star, bead, until the grand star rested at the bottom like a quiet bell. Next time you see the two wrapped sweets near the necklace, can you keep Ansel’s patient count from the first soft harp note?
