Every evening, Oren swept popcorn salt from the arcade tiles and turned the candy crank once for the kids who had waited all day with warm quarters in their fists. He always hoped the gold star candies would tumble out together, because one star alone felt too bright to keep. But the stars stayed sealed behind the glass, glittering above the round gumballs while the machines hummed like sleepy bees.
Until one day, the crank clicked, the cup rang, and only one pale candy dropped. Because of that, Oren crouched to check the jam, smelling sugar dust and warm metal. Because of that, he noticed a tiny door near the base, a door nobody used because everyone watched the glass globe. Inside was a folded paper strip, crisp as a ticket: SHARE THE STARS BY TURNING THE ARROW DOWN.
Oren turned it. The machine gave a soft thunder of candy, and three gold stars rolled out, one after another, enough for the twins by the racing game and the shy drummer at the pinball machine. Their laughter bounced off the pennants overhead. Next time you see the open little door, keep Oren’s secret: the biggest joy was hiding below the bright glass all along.
