Under the sugar rotunda, Elowen invented a game called What Comes Next, placing warm taffy, cool peppermints, and glossy sticks in a widening ring while the room smelled of vanilla dust. Each answer made another question: why did sweetness spread, why did circles soothe, why did the last empty space hum? She set one spiral candy at the center, and every lollipop slowly turned its face toward it, as if listening. From then on, lollipops were made round, so curiosity could run away and still find its way home.
