🎨 How to color it

Layer deep teal through the central stacked circles, burnished gold on the large side ovals, and plum violet along the outer bead-like rings. Use sharp colored pencils and color matching shapes in small mirrored pairs so the many crossing arcs stay balanced. Add a slow fade from pale aqua at the center to indigo near the edges to make the pattern feel like it is opening outward.

Every evening, Sable ran the brass compass around the observatory floor, daring herself to trace eighty-eight perfect arcs before the tide bell finished its wild clanging. The stone was cool under her palm, smelling of salt and metal dust, and the black inlaid circles flashed like little moons beneath the lamps. Until one day, on arc sixty-one, the compass skidded over a tiny oval she had always treated as decoration.

Because of that, the next curve landed crooked; because of that, the whole chain of mirrored rings seemed to buck and whirl, as if the floor had become a storm map. Sable wanted to sprint harder, but the skipped oval kept tugging her eye back. She waited through one full bell note, then another, breathing with the humming walls.

Finally she set the compass point inside the small oval and moved slowly enough to hear the soft scrape complete its circle. The last arc closed exactly as the final bell rolled away, and the observatory blazed with patient, salt-bright moons.
