🎨 How to color it

Layer the central diamond spine in antique gold, the wide fanbursts in peacock teal, the small flowers in coral pink, and the corner chevrons in deep navy. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight stair-step borders and nested diamonds, then switch to light marker fills on the broad fan panels. For a polished Art Deco twist, shade each fan ray from pale teal at the flower to darker teal at the outer edge.

Before the first train, Sarai pressed a cloth dipped in lemon oil along the brass ribs of the station fanlight, waking each line with a soft squeak and a smell like bright peel. No passenger had asked her to do it. The lobby slept in blue shadow; ticket windows blinked with dust, and the tall central panel answered her rag with a narrow, honey-colored shine.

She worked outward, following diamonds, steps, and petals, leaving warmth where her hand had been. At the far fan, a stranger appeared in the glass: an old porter in a cap she had never seen, polishing from the other side with the same small circles. “Kind of you,” he said, though his voice sounded like coins settling in a drawer. When Sarai looked again, only her own face remained, doubled among the gold lines.

At sunrise, travelers crossed the lobby beneath a glow they did not notice, carrying coffee, newspapers, and sleep. Sarai folded the cloth into her pocket. The fanlight held both gifts now: her lemon-oil shine and the stranger’s quiet circles, waking every line before the first train.
