The waiter had forgotten the matches, so she slipped past brass railings and perfume-thick laughter to the service stairs, paying with a torn hem and one lost glove. In the pantry, the matchbook’s penciled number opened a tiny cabinet of party bulbs, each humming with somebody’s wish. She returned carrying not fire but a small electric star, and the room leaned closer under the mezzanine’s velvet hush.
