🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail turquoise and teal, her hair coral pink, the cupcake frosting lavender, and the seashell garlands pearl white with golden beads. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny tail scales, starfish dots, and small fish, then switch to broader strokes for the balloons and open water. Try making the balloons look like clear sea bubbles with pale blue edges and a soft white center.

The story behind this coloring page

Maris Tries One Bubble Bite — All morning in the reef ballroom, the water smelled like vanilla foam and salty sugar. Read the full story →

All morning in the reef ballroom, the water smelled like vanilla foam and salty sugar. Maris balanced a cupcake on her palm and made herself a private rule: one bite before the clam bells rang. She had never tried bubble-frosting before. It fizzed, winked, and made tiny pop-pop sounds that tickled her nose. “Just one brave nibble,” she whispered, while fish threaded ribbons through the coral.

The shell garlands swayed overhead, clicking softly like fancy teeth. Maris lifted the cupcake closer. The frosting bubble on top bulged, shimmered, and—plip!—floated away. It bumped a starfish, bounced off a balloon, and began humming the birthday tune in a squeaky little voice.

Then every decoration joined in. The beads clacked bass notes, the shells sang shoo-la-la, and the balloons puffed out round, wobbly whistles. Maris laughed so hard her first bite became easy, fizzy, and wonderfully silly. Next time you spot the cupcake in her hand, see if you can find the bubble that started the song in the vanilla foam.
