All morning in the reef ballroom, the water smelled like vanilla foam and salty sugar. Maris balanced a cupcake on her palm and made herself a private rule: one bite before the clam bells rang. It fizzed, winked, and made tiny pop-pop sounds that tickled her nose. “Just one brave nibble,” she whispered, while fish threaded ribbons through the coral.
