Behind the warm ovens, a dented wooden spoon tapped Baxter’s mixing bowl: tick, tick, hush. He wanted the batter to taste like his mother’s mooncakes, but cinnamon, cream, and sugared oats only made a flat, sleepy smell. On the spoon handle, a tiny crescent scratch glowed when flour dust drifted over it.
Baxter slipped out of his cozy kitchen and into the back pantry, where jars clicked in the dark like beetle feet. The floor was cold through his paws. To reach the top shelf, he stacked two pans and paid for it with a clanging tumble that sprinkled him white from ears to apron. “Who wrote on my spoon?” he whispered.
A loose tile answered with a puff of nutmeg-scented air. Under it lay a paper curl: ONE PINCH OF WINDOW LIGHT. Baxter laughed, carried the secret back, and stirred beside the sunny pane until gold shimmered through the bowl. If you peek at his spoon hand, can you hear the tick, tick, hush?
