🎨 How to color it

Color the jack-o’-lantern tangerine orange, the thick curling stem bark brown, the smiling spider soft lavender, and the bats smoky gray. Use colored pencils for the spider web inside the stem curl, turning the page as you follow each spiral segment. Try making the pumpkin’s carved eyes glow pale yellow while the little stars shine in alternating gold and silver.

Under the attic rafters, where dust smelled like old paper and cinnamon brooms, Quilla rolled a walnut across the floorboards and tapped her carved grin with pride. She had invented Spider-Drop Dash all by herself: bounce the walnut off a trunk, scoot around the broom bucket, and stop exactly under the dangling string. “Ready, set, rattle!” she called, and the walnut clicked away like tiny hooves.

The game grew faster. Bats swooped through the open round window, stars blinked in the blue-black square of sky, and Quilla’s stem creaked as she leaned to watch each run. She added a twisty tunnel made from a ribbon spool, then a finish bell made from a thimble. Every new piece fit because her own hands had measured it, tied it, and tested it.

Then the string above her twitched. A round little spider slid down, beaming, with chalk dust on all eight feet. Quilla gasped—he had been marking perfect scores in the web hidden under her stem-curl! Soon pumpkin, spider, bats, and attic stars played together, the thimble ringing bright as Quilla began another round: ready, set, rattle—can you spot the secret scorekeeper waiting on his line?
