Under the porch roof, Soren invented Hush-and-Seek to hear which fall sound arrived first. He wanted to name the softest one before the brass doorbell clicked: leaf skitter, mum petals brushing, or the wooden step giving its sleepy creak. The air smelled like dry stems and rain-cooled boards. “Hush now,” he whispered to the bumpy gourds.
A tiny tap-tap came from inside him. Not a footstep. Not the door. A moth had slipped through his crooked grin and was dusting his candle with powdery wings. Each time Soren smiled wider to let it out, his light stretched across the porch, and the hidden sounds came running toward it: scratch of leaf, tick of knob, sigh of railing.
