Under the warm buzz of noon insects, Orla tucked her tail into the scratchiest wool suit in the valley. She had dared herself to step through the daisy pasture gate and say one line in the lamb talent show: “Baa, but with feeling.” The costume smelled like sun-dried socks and clover, and every curl tickled her ears. She lifted one paw, practiced her sweetest smile, and whispered, “First brave step, then snacks.”
Past the fence, the lambs were setting up a stage from two barrels and a plank. Orla waddled closer, wool bobbing, heart thumping a silly drumbeat. She opened her mouth for her grand baa—then froze. Every lamb onstage wore paper fangs, gray sock tails, and serious painted eyebrows. Their banner read: WOLF IMPRESSIONS AT ONE O’CLOCK.
A tiny lamb with crooked fangs bowed to Orla. “Excellent costume,” he said. Orla’s laugh burst out like a squeaky gate. She gave her line anyway, wobbling one paw in the air, and the lambs answered with their best tiny howls. If you spot the lifted paw and that sideways grin, you’ll know the exact second Orla found out courage could be woolly, tickly, and very funny.
