Every day before the wind grew warm, Koda raced the high valley rim and counted river bends by smell: cold stone, pine sap, and the muddy curl where the water turned west. He wanted to finish the first nose-map of every stream below, scratched neatly on flat shale. Until one day, a cloud shaped like a long-tailed fox dropped so low its belly brushed the cliff pines and whispered, “You missed the river that climbs.”
Because of that, Koda bounded after it over cracked ledges, paws skidding on gritty rock while thunder mumbled inside the cloud’s white fur. Because of that, he found a hidden updraft roaring from a split in the cliff; mist burst upward, carrying silver fish scales, leaf boats, and the smell of water running the wrong way. Curiosity yanked him onward faster than caution. The fox-cloud darted through the spray and pointed its nose at a blue ribbon pouring up the stone.
At last Koda pressed one paw to the wet cliff and marked the climbing river on his shale before the sun burned the fox-cloud thin. Next time you spot the wolf above the winding valley, see if his ears still lean toward cold stone, pine sap, and the muddy curl where the water turned west.
