🎨 How to color it

Color the wolf with layers of silver gray and cream, make the cattails warm brown, the pond blue-green, and the winding tree trunks soft bark brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the many fur strokes, cattail stems, and twisting branches, saving broader marker fills for the water and open patches of bank. Try a mischievous sunset twist by adding peachy highlights to the wolf’s ears and cattail tops while keeping the deep forest cool green.

The story behind this coloring page

Quill’s Pond-Bottom Party — Every evening, Quill padded to the cattail pond and counted the frogs’ croaks like hiccups in a jar. Read the full story →

Every evening, Quill padded to the cattail pond and counted the frogs’ croaks like hiccups in a jar. He wanted one big, silly song to share with the whole marsh, but the frogs only went glump, glump, glump, as gloomy as wet socks.

Until one day, a bubble popped beside his paw and smelled exactly like peppermint mud. Because of that, Quill poked the pond with a reed. Because of THAT, the reed sank, twanged, and lifted a trapdoor nobody had thought to check—right under the water lilies. Up bobbed beetle drums, snail-shell kazoos, and a sign that read: FOR EMERGENCY JOY ONLY.

“Emergency!” Quill barked. He blew a kazoo so hard a heron dropped its minnow. The frogs laughed first, then croaked in wobbling harmony, and Quill splashed the rhythm for every owl, mouse, and sleepy fish to join. Next time you spot the cattails around him, can you hear the marsh sharing one big, silly song—glump, glump, hooray?
