🎨 How to color it

Try tawny brown feathers on the raptor, blue-gray shadows in the snowdrifts, and deep evergreen needles under the heavy white pine caps. Use sharp colored pencils for the many feather tufts and pine needles, coloring outward from the body before filling the larger snow shapes softly. Add a faint lavender-to-pale-blue glow behind the trees so the warm raptor looks at home in the cold forest.

All morning, under the hush of falling flakes, Sable tested the forest with one small challenge: find the quietest warm place before the blue dusk bellied over the hills. She pressed her feathered cheek to a sunlit rock, nosed into a hollow stump, and stood beside a steaming spring that smelled of stone and moss, but each place had a drip, a crackle, or a crow’s far caw.

Near the oldest pines, the air changed. Snow lay thick on every branch, yet underneath the needles hung dry and green, making a soft room that breathed resin. A shivering beetle clicked beside her claw. “May I tuck in too?” it whispered. Sable lifted one careful arm, and the branch above dipped lower, catching more snow without letting it fall.

By dusk, beetles, moths, and Sable’s own warm feathers rested beneath the bowed boughs. The forest kept its breath slow. Ever since, pine branches have held snow in white blankets, leaving secret green shelters below; next time you see those drooping needles, can you find Sable’s winter tuck?
