Every day at noon, Dax sprang beside the carnival shoals and slapped the sea into silly shapes for the tidepool vendors. Plop went a jelly hat. Splork went a foamy mustache. The air smelled like salt taffy and warm kelp chips, and nobody laughed harder than the crab selling fizzy clam soda.
Until one day, Dax’s biggest splash made no splork at all. It went clink. Because of that, he dove under the curling wave and found a tiny brass lunchbox wedged where nobody ever looked, beneath the white froth. Inside sat twelve sea-plum pies, each wrapped in waxy kelp paper, still warm as sunlit sand. Because of that, Dax understood why the shy urchin bakers had been searching the shoals with droopy spines and flour on their noses.
He could have made a grand show of returning them. Instead, Dax tucked each pie onto a vendor’s empty plate while the wave hid his grin. “Who ordered mystery dessert?” he whispered. By sunset, every stall smelled buttery and sweet, and the urchins found only crumbs and happy customers. Next time you spot Dax springing beside the carnival shoals, check the splash—something generous may be hiding under the white froth.
