🎨 How to color it

Try a classic black-and-white soccer ball with electric yellow lightning bolts, cherry red starbursts, turquoise target rings, and violet comic clouds. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny circles, shards, and chevrons, then switch to markers for the broad jagged bursts around the ball. For extra pop-art energy, shade the cracks on the ball with a thin gray shadow and alternate warm and cool colors in the background patterns.

Under the old echo court, Arlo rolled a pale practice ball along the chalk line and counted every soft thump. He had set himself a challenge: one hundred gentle taps without making the sleeping wall answer. The wall was covered in zigzags and round dents from games nobody remembered, and it smelled of dust, rain, and metal bleachers.

Ninety-seven. Ninety-eight. On ninety-nine, the ball nudged a loose pebble. Tick. The pebble struck the wall, and the whole court held its breath. Then the ball leaped forward with a sound like paper tearing thunder—KRAK!—and black, many-sided marks flashed across its skin where the echo had touched it.

Arlo waited. The marks did not fade. They made the ball easier to see in the dim court, as if quiet had learned to leave footprints. “So that’s where you were hiding,” he whispered. Ever since, soccer balls have carried dark panels to show the places where the first patient kick found the secret thunder; can you spot the crack that began with one tiny tick?
