Under the cool lip of a sandy hollow, Tavian pressed three pebbles into a crooked line and whispered the rule of his new game: every stone had to point toward home. He wanted a whole path before the sun slid behind the dunes. The best white pebbles glittered out in the dry wash, where the wind hissed like paper and the ground felt warm through his toes.
He stepped out, nudging stones with his beak and tucking them against his frill. One pebble cost him a scratch from a thorny grass clump. Another rolled down a slope, making him climb after it while dust tickled his nose. “Stay still, little moon-rock,” he murmured, and this time he pressed it deep enough to hold.
By dusk, Tavian carried fewer pebbles than he had planned, but each one bore a horn-scrape mark he had made himself. Back at the hollow, the path shone in a gentle curve, not perfect, but his. Next time you spot the stones by his feet, can you trace which ones point toward home under the cool lip of the sandy hollow?
