Under the fish-dock lanterns, Asta tapped three shield circles and whispered, “Moon-wake, moon-wake, find me a shine.” She had just invented the game: sail past the harbor rocks, bring back one silver shell, and hide it under the mast before supper. The longship creaked into black-blue water. Salt stung her lips. Halfway out, a wave slapped the bow and stole her honey cake from her belt pouch.
Then the moonlit water bulged. A sea dragon lifted two long heads, both hissing like kettles. One neck was caught in an old fishing rope, tight as a bite. Asta wanted her shell, but she cut the rope with her spear tip and tucked her last oat crumb onto a floating plank. The dragon blinked, sank, and left a silver shell on the deck where nobody else could see. Back at the mast, Asta hid it under the sail rope. Next time you spot the shield circles, tap three and whisper, “Moon-wake.”
