Every day, Nessa steered the cloud-barge from dock to dock, collecting spare festival laughter in blue glass bottles. She wanted one perfect bottle for the silent queen’s bell tower, where even the pigeons cooed politely. The rigging creaked, the sail smelled of rain, and the bottles went hee-hee-tink in their crate.
Until one day, a cloud-goat landed on the bow and hiccuped lightning into her soup mug. “Absolutely not,” Nessa said, but the goat hiccuped again—BLOOP—and every bottle uncorked at once. Because of that, giggles rolled over the rail. Because of that, the floating castle guards began snorting inside their shiny helmets.
At last, Nessa raised her fire-wand and stirred the loose laughter into a bright spinning signal. The queen opened the tower window, heard the goat hiccup like a tiny trumpet, and laughed so hard the bell rang by itself. If you trace the ropes to the wheel, you may catch Nessa still steering after that hee-hee-tink.
